FAQ

What is a tintype?

Tintype photography is a historic photographic process that was popular in the 19th century. It involves creating a direct positive image on a thin sheet of metal, typically iron coated with a dark lacquer or enamel. Tintypes are unique in that they produce a reversed image, and they are characterized by their monochromatic, high-contrast, and often slightly blurred appearance.

Tintype was commonly used for portrait photography, capturing images of individuals and families during the Civil War era and the American Old West. The resulting images were durable and didn't require a glass plate negative, which was an advantage over other photographic processes of the time.

Today, tintype photography has experienced a revival among artists and enthusiasts who appreciate its vintage and handcrafted aesthetic. Modern practitioners use a similar wet plate collodion process to create these unique and timeless photographs.

Tintype Posing

For studio sessions images are from the chest or waist up due to studio space. If you prefer an outdoor or onsite location we can discuss further for a custom package.

Tintype Glasses and Makeup

If your glasses have UV coatings or transition lenses, there will be some issues. Uv coatings come out foggy, and transition lenses will be BLACK. I recommend frames with no lenses or not using them at all. If you want to wear your glasses keep this in mind.

Tintype skin tones/Makeup/Tattoos

Tintype photography has a slight to sometimes drastic reaction to different skin tones. Because the UV light spectrum of tintypes, people with red undertones will appear darker i.e., freckles will appear prominent and dark, if you have a sunburn you will appear darker. On the opposite end if you have bluer undertones they will appear bright white i.e. blue eyes appear white.

Makeup Suggestions: If you tend to have dark circles around your eyes they will appear darker and more prominent. Concealer is advised.

Red lipstick will appear darker or almost black

Tattoos: some tattoos due to their color may not register because of the UV light spectrum.

When will we get our photos?

Your will receive an online gallery link with all your photos within maximum 4 weeks (sometimes less depending on the season I photograph your story). You can download all the photos from the gallery but also share them, choose your favorites, and also order prints!

For tintype the plate needs to be varnished, so they are usually ready the next day. Time permitting you can take your plate with you same day.

How many pictures will we receive?

For the analogue packages it will depend on how many rolls we shoot ,but one 35mm roll of film is typically 30-36 images and one 120 roll is 12 images.

Tintype plates are one-of-ones, so it will depend on how many plates we do per session.

Where are you based and do you travel?

I''m located in Downtown Houston. Yes, I do travel for the analogue and Tintype packages. Travel fee applicable .
